It's Getting Watery In Here

3 Ways To Clean Your Drains

The drains in your home see a lot of action throughout a single day. Between laundry, dishes, toilet duties, and other bathroom routines, your drains are always busy. This is why cleaning them and maintaining them properly is very important. Imagine a single day of not being able to use the drains in your home. You wouldn't be able to run the dishwasher to wash dishes, and you couldn't take a shower or flush a toilet. It would be a frustrating and unproductive day. Keeping your drains clean is very important, and if you do have a problem, you should know what to do about it. Read on for ways to clean your drains.

1. Snake The Drain

Snaking a drain uses a small plastic—or sometimes larger metal—tool to get into the drains to remove clogs and other materials from the drains. You can use a small plastic drain cleaning snake in your kitchen or bathroom sinks, or even in the bathtub to remove hair or food particles from the drains; but if you have a much bigger issue further out in your drain, a long metal snake or a rotating snake may be the preferred method of use. A rotating snake can remove clogs from things such as tree roots, or clogs from wipes or feminine products that shouldn't be put down the drain. It can also help remove grease buildup from your drains. When using a rotating snake, it's best to put it into the cleanout outside of your home, rather than into a drain inside your home, as it can cause damage to the drains inside your home.

2. Drain Clearing Liquid

A drain clearing liquid can also be used to help remove clogs and to clean your drains. Drain clearing liquids can be found at most hardware stores or at a big box store. Follow the manufacturer's guide to help you use it properly. Pour the liquid down the drain, and allow it to work on its own. A drain clearing liquid can eventually wear on your pipes and on your drains, so be careful when using these types of products.

3. Plunger

A plunger can help clean your drains and remove clogs. If you have an issue in a sink or toilet, a plunger can help to remove a clog. The suction from the plunger will help to pull the clog out and loosen it enough to allow water to run through the drain again. Apply enough pressure to create the suction, then pump it a few times to remove the clog.

If you have issues with your drains, it's more than likely because of misuse. Be sure that you are using your drains appropriately throughout your home and you are doing what you can to clear clogs or free slow drains.
